Spiderman

Spiderman the alter ego of Peter Parker, is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics superhero created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko who first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (August, 1962). He has since become one of the world's most popular superheroes.

Spider-man was created by Stanley and Ditko for the growing teen market in the comic book industry in the early 1960s. It is even said that Stan Lee wanted a character that reminded him much of himself when he was a teenager. One thing very apparent in the Spider-man character is the issues and complications in his life. Instead of his superpowers making life easier for him it did the exact opposite by maximizing the complications in his life. However, despite all his personal problems Spider-man is still very dedicated in fighting crime because he believes that “with great power come great responsibility”. A very noble statement taught to him by his beloved uncle, Ben Parker. Peter Parker had to learn the truth of this statement the hard way when he let a criminal responsible for his uncle’s death escape in an earlier encounter.

POWERS/ABILITIES

Ability to stick to solid surfaces, super-strength, precognitive "Spider-Sense", enhanced speed and agility, "webbing" organically produced from his wrists in some variations.

POPULARITY FACTOR

Spider-man expanded the dramatic potential of the comic book industry by proving that a series with a strong focus on a more human character and his personal struggles was a viable basis for a successful series. The whole purpose of the creation of the Spiderman character was to cater to the increased teenage interest in comics. At first many were skeptical about a hero who had many personal issues but were later impressed by Spiderman’s success in its first appearance in the issue of Amazing Fantasy #15. This only proved that a normal type character can be successful.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Spiderman is tremendously popular and is perhaps the most recognizable superhero alongside Superman and Batman. Through the years, he has appeared in a handful of animated series, a weekly comic strip and, recently, two very successful films. Meanwhile, Marvel has published several comic book series featuring the character (most notably Amazing Spider-man. The Spiderman character has grown from shy high school kid to troubled college student to married man, but the core of the character’s theme remains the same.
