Online Comics - The New Comic Book Wave

The popularity of online comics has grown rapidly over the past few years, and would continue to grow. This is the new approach aspiring creators now prefer to take. There is nothing more to say besides that this is an online generation. Unlike the traditional route of publishing your comics, publishing your comics online can be done by anyone for free. The drawback is that since anyone can publish their own comics online there are many amateur comics. Many are not aware of this, but some of these amateur comics have even damaged the image of online comics. For this reason a lot of Publishers do not even take online comics seriously unless it is well accomplished online. And to be a well accomplished online comic is not a small or easy task.

Some of you may be asking, what does it mean for a comic to be accomplished online? Simple, the comic is very popular. This could mean that the comic has thousands of unique visitors a day, also meaning it has thousands more of page views every day. As mentioned earlier, this is no small or easy thing, absolutely not.

To create successful online comics, you have to meet several conditions, which all involve consistency. Of course, an accomplished web comic displays originality or uniqueness even if its concept involves a common theme. Accomplished online comics have good art. I know when one mentions good art some are already thinking of art like marvel or those found in the best anime. Not the case. This means that the art is well proportioned for the creator’s style and neat without any sloppy or rough lines. In this case good art could be better than Marvel or worse, as long as it meets the two requirements stated above, the average person would consider it good.

One of the most important factors common in all accomplished online comics or at least most of them is their good storyline. To be a really accomplished online comic your story has to be captivating. People have to want to come back for more. Contrary to popular belief it is going to be hard to create a successful online comic with only captivating art. This is why it is important to develop an excellent script first. Now, with a unique idea, good art, and captivating storyline, a creator has to be consistent in each. Consistency is what your audience would be looking for as well as publishers. Consistency also helps build your credibility as a comic creator.

We all know that skill is involved in creating a successful comic book. But many don’t seem to know that skill is only part of the requirement. It is not only natural skill that led to some online comics’ success. It is a lot of practice and knowledge of comics or operating online. Many online comic creators have a lot of skill but are in no way accomplished. In fact less than two percent of web comics are accomplished. This proves that going online does not make things easy or guaranteed. The whole online process can be fruitless if you don’t learn how to properly create comics and how to operate online. Your online comic can end up sitting there for years with little to no visitors. I believe no one wants to put in all that work of creating a web comic to yield nothing.

Once again, if you think it is just about skill or you can create anything and people would automatically like it, then you would be in the 98 to 99% of unsuccessful comics. Of course this is okay if you are only creating comics for fun and you don’t care about what happens. In reality, it is typically rare for a creator to not care about his or her created product, simply because effort and time was put into it. The combination of effort and time usually equals hard work. I have not yet met a comic creator who worked hard to create his/her comic book product online or offline say that he/she didn’t care whether anybody reads it. It is very hard to believe that all the investing of your time was just for fun.

If you want much more for your online comic concept, then you must be willing to learn it. And that is the good news, that it can be learned. With that said, it means it is up to you as an aspiring creator to learn the most effective way of creating web comics.
