The comic book character Bat-man (originally referred to as The Batman, and alter ego Bruce Wayne), is a fictional character and superhero who first appeared in Detective Comics #27 in May 1939. Although the character was co-created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, it is said that only Kane receives official credit for the character.

Due to the success of Superman in Action comics in 1939 editors at the comic book division of National Publications which was later named DC Comics were urged to demand more superheroes for their titles. And The Bat-man was the result of that. Of course like most characters over the years he has undergone some changes into the character we know him as today.

In the earlier periods of the comic book Bat-man was much more violent than he is today. He was known for carrying a pistol and wiping out most of the criminals from the face of the earth. Regardless, he was a success.

However the Bat-man of today is known for not wanting anything to do with guns. Since a gun is what was used to kill his parents Bruce knows was personally affected by the effects of guns. As a superhero Batman is equipped with many advance tools and gadgets to aid in his crime fighting.

Known to be a genius and in peak physical condition; is a master detective and arguably the greatest martial artist in the DC Universe, has vast personal wealth and access to various high tech equipments he uses to fight crime.

First of all, Batman has a good storyline to it, and has existed for decades. It is almost impossible to have a character that exists for decades and is not modified. Therefore, Bat-man has definitely been modified, but still retained the core characteristic that I believe makes him popular. I believe this characteristic to be “his edge”, and supposedly having no fear of anything. Bat-man has faced countless villains that are far superior in strength, brilliance and power than he is, but somehow is never afraid and eventually defeats them.

The Bat-man is someone that many fans want to be like, for the reason that it seems like he got it all together. Money, intelligence, physical excellence and being an all human superhero he can hold his own. Other than being a billionaire, expert detective in the category of Sherlock Holmes, a skilled fighter, and a genius, Batman is a very cut throat, no nonsense rough guy, who brings the toughness to good guys and heroism. This character makes you think that you don’t have to be a nice guy to be a good guy.

Lucky for characters like The Bat-man there are audiences or people who love good guy characters like him, therefore Batman appeals to them.
