Art director jobs require the overseeing or supervision of artistic design of advertisements, print materials, and the filming of television commercials. Art-directors are responsible for the overall quality of the finished product. The art-director is in charge of choosing a photographer, an illustrator, models, and any props necessary for an ad. It is not uncommon to have the art director help to cast the actors fr a television advertisement.

The art-director can personally retouch or correct any errors or imperfections of a print ad that comes back from the printer, since he/she in charge of the look and feel. The art-director's team includes a copywriter (one who writes the ads). The art-director and the copywriter are the creative team that sometimes decides on an advertising concept together; determining how the ad will look and what the ad will say.

Art-directors use a computer program to create rough layouts of print ads that will appear in a magazine, newspaper or billboards. In order to continue with the concept, the layout must be approved by the client. The client first look of the ad would be in the form of a storyboard, which is a kind of comic strip version of the action and dialogue of the ad. The art-director is the one that will draw the storyboard model for the filmed ad.
